The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s appeal seeking permission to produce additional evidence in the case pending before Gujarat High Court against his conviction in a case of custodial death.

The court also rejected Bhatt’s prayer seeking recusal of Justice Shah from hearing the case.

Appearing for him, senior advocate Devadatt Kamat told the SC that the expert evidence of a doctor was important to find out whether the death was due to a medical condition and not custodial torture. This was necessary to prove that statements of three other doctors in the case were not trustworthy, he said.
