TMC MP Saket Gokhale’s remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in RS Wednesday drew protests from the Treasury benches and prompted Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to remove the remarks. During a discussion on the working of the MHA, Gokhale, who initiated the discussion, alleged that over 6,900 corruption cases have been registered by CBI on which no convictions have taken place. Countering it, Shah said, “Wrong information is being given to the House. The number of cases he (Gokhale) is talking about. are those registered on the orders of the Supreme Court and HC, for political violence in West Bengal. These are not cases of corruption. In areas where we were getting a majority, people were targeted. When the victims went to court, the HC ordered that CBI take it up. There is no conclusion in these cases because West Bengal does not have a single CBI special court.” After Gokhale, while initiating the discussion, cast aspersions on Shah’s conduct as well as against BJP, Union Ministers J P Nadda, Kiren Rijiju and some BJP MPs demanded that he withdraw his statements, but he refused. The Chairman said that the remarks would be deleted as they were “personal”.
