Tripura’s Opposition CPM announced a weeklong statewide protest on Saturday with demands such as work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Tripura Urban Employment Programme and the payment of pending wages.

CPM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said there had been no work in blocks, especially in the Autonomous District Council areas including the Chhamanu block, Ganganagar block, Raima Valley block, Raishyabari block, Dasda, Jampui Hills, Damcherra in the Dhalai, North Tripura and South Tripura district for the past four or five years. He also said that some workers had not been paid for the work they had done.

The CPM leader also blamed the BJP-led state government over the recent fuel crisis which erupted after the disruption of railway traffic owing to landslides in Assam.

“Highlighting these issues, we are going to hold protests in a democratic manner in all subdivisions across the state from May 13 till 18. In some places, we may hold protests and in some places we may submit memorandums. We will hold our programme in Agartala on May 14,” said Chaudhury.

“In the country, there is a double-engine government and in the state, there is a triple engine government. Now, everyone is busy with the Lok Sabha poll campaign. True, this is the biggest democratic fight of the country. Any minister or CM may go outside the state (for campaigning) but someone (from the administration) should stay here to look into the pitiable condition of the state,” said the party secretary.

By “triple engine”, Chaudhury meant the BJP and its alliance partners in the state, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura and the TIPRA Motha.

CPM leader Manik Dey also demanded the government set up a temporary buffer stock at the earliest.

Dey demanded a government job for the widow of a man who was killed in a road accident in Assam while travelling to Guwahati to take a recruitment exam of Tripura State Cooperative Bank. He also said the state government should bear the treatment expenses for all the people injured in the recent incident.
