West Bengal Voter List 2025: West Bengal is witnessing a flurry of activity as the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) kicked off in 12 states and Union Territories from November 4. While Bihar saw much controversy over the exercise, West Bengal has also seen plenty of reactions from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in the opposition in the state. Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Election scheduled for next year (2026), it is very important for those registered to vote in the state to check whether their name or the name of their parents or relatives appears in the electoral roll of the 2002 SIR.

West Bengal SIR 2002 voter list: Why is Election Commission holding SIR in West Bengal

This isn’t the first time an SIR is being conducted. Independent India has seen eight SIR exercises from 1951 to 2004.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that the SIR is being held in 12 states and UTs, including West Bengal, to maintain the “purity” of the electoral rolls. “For the past few decades, almost all political parties have continuously complained about the impurity of the electoral roll,” he said while announcing the exercise.

The last such exercise was held in 2002 and it is only natural that many voters who were on that list have moved elsewhere or died. There is also the chance of voters registered at more than one place, and wrongful inclusion of foreigners.

The Election Commission will publish the draft electoral list on December 9 and the final electoral roll on February 7, 2026. The poll body will arrive at these lists by following a two-pronged approach:

Why Election Commission is Conducting SIR
Maintaining Electoral Roll Purity After 23 Years
Deceased Voters
Remove voters from 2002 rolls who have since passed away
Relocated Voters
Update records of voters who moved to different locations
Duplicate Entries
Eliminate voters registered at multiple places
Foreign Inclusions
Remove wrongful inclusion of foreign nationals
