Three Indian writers make it to DSC Prize final shortlist 2017

The final shortlist for the DSC Prize 2017 was announced at the London School of Economics and Political Science yesterday. The winner will be awarded at the Award Ceremony at the Dhaka Literary Festival in Bangladesh November 18, 2017.

Three Indian writers have made it to the final list of the prestigious DSC Prize list for South Asian Literature 2017 that was announced at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Wednesday. Ritu Menon, along with four other jury members -Senath Walter Perera, Steven Bernstein, Valentine Cunningham and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown – gave out the names of the five books that have been selected.

The shortlist is a diverse mix of established writers and young novelists who are making a mark in the South Asian literary landscape. The selected authors all hail from different background and geographies. The list consists of three Indian writers writers, of which two are based outside of the South Asian region, one Sri Lankan writer and one American writer based in India.

Ritu Menon, Chair of the jury said: “After deliberating on the many exceptional qualities of the novels selected, and considering the disparities in our backgrounds, the jury was unanimous in its decision on the five shortlisted titles. All five display a remarkable skill in animating current universal preoccupations in unconventional idioms, and from a distinctively South Asian perspective.”

The winner of the DSC Prize will be announced and awarded US $25,000 (16 Lakh) at a special Award Ceremony at the Dhaka Literary Festival in Bangladesh on November 18, 2017. The jury had earlier announced a long list of 13 novels at the Oxford Bookstore in New Delhi, August 2017.
