What haven’t the Japanese invented that changed the world? From Anime and Manga to Karate, Judo, and even video games like the PlayStation and Nintendo, our lives have been made better by their inventions. With such feats under their belt, who else could we look to when it came to banishing our laziness and being our most productive selves? And even for that, they have an invention: Kaizen.

It is a Japanese management philosophy that focuses on continuous improvement and though it was originally built to be used in a business context, the principles of Kaizen can also be applied to personal development and overcoming laziness.

According to Dr Mazher Ali, consultant, psychiatry, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, the trick is to break down tasks into small, manageable steps and consistently make incremental improvements over time. “By taking small actions regularly, one can build momentum and gradually overcome laziness,” he said.

Psychologist Dr Nisha Khanna explained that the Kaizen technique also involves doing a root-cause analysis of a situation as that will help resolve it. “You must first acknowledge the problem. Then plot an action plan to resolve it. Ask why the failure to do a task has occurred and plan how you can do it better the next time.”

Laziness is subjective. It works differently for everyone. Sometimes it is also a part of our temperament, according to Dr Khanna. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get things done. Here are some ways you can apply the Kaizen technique on an individual level and become more productive.

Health and fitness

Making small changes to diet and exercise habits over time can lead to significant improvements in overall well-being, according to Dr Ali.

Dr Khanna explained that an unwillingness to work or laziness while working could be due to lesser dopamine levels in our body which are tied to our productivity levels. She suggested exercising regularly and eating foods rich in L-tyrosine, like fish, eggs, nuts, and soybeans, as these will help increase your dopamine levels.

Learning and personal development

Consistently dedicating time to learn new skills or acquire knowledge can help expand one’s abilities and personal growth.

You can cultivate an open mindset that values new perspectives and ideas. Recognise that there is always room for growth and that different approaches can lead to innovation and personal development, Dr Ali recommended.

Productivity and time management

Implementing small changes in daily routines, organisation methods, or prioritisation techniques can enhance productivity and efficiency.

Clearly define what you want to achieve and break it down into smaller, manageable tasks, according to Dr Ali. “This makes it easier to get started and maintain momentum,” he said.

He suggested employing techniques like the Pomodoro Technique (working in focused bursts with short breaks) or time blocking (allocating specific time slots for different activities) to enhance productivity and overcome procrastination.

Emotional well-being

Practicing small habits, like mindfulness or gratitude exercises, can contribute to emotional resilience and a positive mindset.

Get in the habit of expressing gratitude for the positive aspects of your life, spend time with supportive and uplifting people who inspire you, and engage in activities that bring you joy and foster positive emotions.
