Now,a nano diagnostic device for deadly diseases

Bigtec has developed hand held diagnostic device that can be used in remote areas to diagnose infectious diseases quickly and in cost effective way. This nano device uses the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for carrying out the diagnostic tests for Hepatitis,Chikangunya and Dengue.

A pathogen’s DNA is taken from a blood sample. The PCR sets in motion a chain reaction in which the DNA template is exponentially amplified,generating millions or more copies of the DNA piece. Once that’s done,it becomes easy to identify the pathogen. This device has an in-built Bluetooth connectivity,which enables it to be connected all the time to a mobile phone of a doctor in a distant location,sending him all details of the test process and results.

PCRs are currently done by big machines that require trained personnel. They cost a minimum of Rs. 12 Lakhs and take between 4 to 6 hours to produce the test results. Bigtec has revolutionized this concept by shrinking the PCRs to a size just a little more than an average fixed line telephone instrument and made it affordable and available across geographies. The company’s hand-held device will cost about Rs. 20,000,requires minimal training to handle it,and produces test results in 12-15 minutes. One more positive aspect of a test with this nano device is that it is very economical as it should cost the patient about Rs 100.
