With food becoming pricier by the day, people worldwide are changing their diets and many are no longer having the same food they had two years ago, says a survey.
The findings are part of a survey commissioned by UK charity group Oxfam that covered over 16,400 people in 17 countries, including India.
“54 per cent of overall respondents and a majority of people in most countries surveyed said they are not eating the same food as they did two years ago ¿ the period before the current food price crisis began,” the report released today said.
The survey was conducted by international research consultancy GlobeScan between April 6 and May 6. Other nations covered include Brazil,Germany,Ghana,Pakistan, the UK and the USA.
The results come at a time when many countries, especially emerging economies such as India and China, are grappling with high food prices which even threatens to derail their growth momentum. India’s food inflation stood at 9.01 per cent for the week ended May 28.
According to the report,globally,39 per cent of those who said their diet had changed, put the blame on rising food prices while 33 per cent cited health reasons.
About 66 per cent people surveyed said that food cost was a top concern.
“Huge numbers of people, especially in the world¿s poorest countries, are cutting back on the quantity or quality of the food they eat because of rising food prices,” Oxfam Executive Director Jeremy Hobbs said in a statement
