Krithi Shetty’s affinity for long eyelashes resonates with beauty enthusiasts worldwide. In a Vogue Beauty Secrets video, the Telugu actor revealed she keeps an eyelash curler on her bedside table and that she doesn’t step out without curling her lashes at least once.
“Our eyelashes are extremely delicate, and frequent or improper use of curlers can cause them to break,” said Dr Noopur Jain, chief consultant dermatologist and founder of Skinzest. “The risk increases manifold if the curler is old, poorly designed, used with excessive force, or applied to mascara-coated lashes,” she said.
Dr Jain explained that the skin around eyelids is extremely delicate and may get pinched or pulled if the eyelash curler is used inadequately. “There can be pain, redness or a bruise in the affected area. Uncleaned curlers can cause bacterial invasion in the eye, resulting in conjunctivitis or styes. Avoid sharing the eye curlers or clean the curler frequently,” she said.
“Using lash curlers over an extended period of time can weaken the hair follicles of lashes and cause lash loss. The damage can be so bad that entire lashes can come out from the root itself, which may take weeks or even months to grow back,” Dr Jain told indianexpress.com.
Choose wisely: Opt for a curler with smooth edges, reliable springs, and soft pads. Replace worn-out pads promptly.
Clean regularly: Disinfect your curler after every use to prevent bacterial buildup.
Be cautious: Avoid curling wet lashes, as they are more prone to breakage.
“Trying social media trends like heating your eyelash curler before use for a better lift, could hurt you if you do not monitor the heat used. It could also mess with the formulation of your mascara, causing it to clump or look unflattering,” said Bonish Jain, Founder of PAC cosmetics.
Bonish also suggested holding the curler away from the roots and against your lash line, ensuring lashes are placed appropriately before curling them. “Clean your eyelash curler after every use to remove any dirt, product buildup, or bacteria. Apply gentle pressure and avoid pressing down on your curler too hard as it could damage your lashes or ruin the curl,” he said.
