Masaba Gupta’s social media proves her love for beauty and skincare. The founder of a makeup brand, the Indian designer recently took to Instagram to share some photos that documented and encapsulated her entire month. In one of the slides, the designer uploaded a photo of a small bowl of chilled rice water, which she captioned, ‘Name a better, more inexpensive toner for the face?!’

Taking a cue, we spoke to experts to find out what happens to the skin if you use rice water as a toner during the summer months. But first, what exactly is rice water?

According to Asmita Dhekne Chebbi, venereology and leprosy dermatologist and cosmetologist at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, rice water is the starchy liquid obtained by soaking or rinsing uncooked rice. “Hailed by Koreans and Japanese for its myriad skincare benefits, rice water boasts a rich composition that includes vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants, contributing to its acclaimed efficacy in beauty regimens,” she told indianexpress.com.

Adding, Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist at Dr Shareefa Skincare Clinic, Mumbai, said that “cold-soaked rice water” is best suited for this purpose because of its hydrating and skin-brightening effects. This toner contains enzymes and vitamins that help soothe the skin and hydrate it, along with ferulic acid and PABA (para amino benzoic acid) that help brighten the skin.

What are the benefits of applying chilled rice water?

“This liquid can be used immediately or fermented for a few days, enriching it with additional nutrients and enhancing its benefits for hair and skin,” said Dr Chebbi.

Proponents claim that rice water is a powerhouse of nutrients that promotes a radiant complexion. Keeping it in the refrigerator and applying the chilled liquid is a coolant that refreshes the skin during hot and humid summer months, she continued.

“Its antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin E and ferulic acid, help combat free radicals, slowing the ageing process and minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, its soothing properties can calm irritated or inflamed skin conditions like eczema or sunburn,” said Dr Chebbi.

Points to note

However, she warned of exercising caution while using this ingredient. “Some individuals with sensitive skin may experience irritation or allergic reactions, necessitating a patch test before widespread application.”

According to her, excessive use of rice water on hair might lead to protein buildup, causing stiffness and potential breakage. Its efficacy also relies on consistency in application, and results may not be immediate or drastic.
