Rules are rules—or so the naysayers have insisted in front of the International Cricket Council (ICC). There are growing calls for the ICC to suspend Afghanistan, whose Talibani rulers have refused to field a women’s cricket team contrary to the cricket body’s rules. Australia has already boycotted bilateral series against Afghanistan, and UK politicians and an anti-apartheid activist want the England and South African teams to follow suit. So far, the ICC is not playing ball. The decision may rest on India’s bilateral equations with Afghanistan’s changed regime.

So, what is India’s equation with the rulers in Afghanistan? Delhi has not officially recognised the Taliban regime yet. However, the first high-level bilateral engagement between India’s Foreign Secretary and a Talibani representative took place on Wednesday in Dubai.
On agenda: Cricket diplomacy aside, the duo discussed a range of issues, including India’s security concerns in Afghanistan. India’s humanitarian assistance towards Afghans and the use of Iran’s Chabahar port for access to the conflict-ridden country were also on the table.

Tragic: At least six people were killed and dozens injured in a stampede in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati on Wednesday evening. The state government has launched an inquiry into the incident.
