Twelve persons, including O P Nayar, a veteran technician from Assamese film industry, were killed in two separate road accidents in Assam on Monday.

While 63-year-old Nayar (real name Moinuddin Ahmed), who had done lights for over 50 Assamese films beginning with Dr Bezbaruah of Brajen Baruah in 1969, was killed when a Mahindra trekker hit him at Six Mile point in the heart of Guwahati around 1:30 pm. Meanwhile, 11 people were killed when a bus carrying a marriage party collided head on with a loaded truck near Laluk in Lakhimpur district, Upper Assam, at 3 am.

Of the 11 killed in the Laluk mishap, five were women, three children and three men. Thirty-six others who sustained injuries have been admitted to the Lakhimpur civil hospital. The victims mainly belong to five families in Laluk. They were returning after a bou-bhaat feast at Brahmajan near Gohpur in the adjoining Sonitpur district.

Incidents of road accidents have gone up at an alarming rate in Assam in the recent months. Official reports have put the total casualty in road mishaps in the state during 2006-07 at 1,604, meaning four deaths per day on an average.

Only on Sunday, two persons were killed and seven injured when a marriage party vehicle collided head-on with a truck at Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district.
