NEW DELHI, January 9: Woven fabrics as well as upholstery fabrics, denim, textile carpets, yarns of different colours are among the 127 items whose imports have been allowed freely under open general licence (OGL) from January 1, 1998. This represents the first phase of opening up the textile sector to global competition.
Earlier, these items had been allowed to be imported against special import licences in the 1997-2002 export-import policy.
The liberalisation process is in accordance with the path-breaking bilateral textile agreements signed by India with the European Union and the United States in December 1994 in exchange for greater market access.ÿ
