MUMBAI, October 3: At least 15 workers were injured, some seriously, when a building under construction collapsed inside the Mumbai University campus at Kalina today afternoon.

Reportedly this is for the first time that a building has collapsed inside the university premises. At around 12.30 pm today, a 50-feet long slab of the `Marathi Bhasha Sahitya Bhavan’ suddenly gave way and crashed from a height of 22 feet, injuring several workers at the site.

Some of the labourers who were working on the slab were partially buried in the rubble following the crash. The fire brigade and police officials rushed the victims to Sion Hospital and V N Desai Hospital.

The Vice-Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh, who visited the site this afternoon, told Express Newsline: “The work on the slab had just begun this morning. University’s junior engineer, A K Duraphe was also injured .”

She announced a three-member committee to probe into this crash. Top university officials, including pro-vice chancellor Dr Naresh Chandra and Senate member Amarjit Singh Manhas, also rushed to the crash site.
