KHARAR, Jan 25: All arrangements have been made to conduct free and fair as well as peaceful elections to the Ropar (Reserve) Parliamentary constituency. As many as 1,501 polling stations have been set up for this purpose where a total of 12,88,850 electorates shall exercise their franchise on February 16.

This was disclosed by Kulbir Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Returning Officer for the Ropar (Reserve) Parliamentary constituency, while addressing a meeting of the assistant returning officers and police officials of those five districts which fall under this constituency.

This was done in order to review the

security arrangements in the constituency and to strengthen co-ordination between the concerned officials.

He informed that as many as 352 polling stations out of the total of 1,501 polling stations have been identified as sensitive on the basis of the report prepared jointly by the assistant returning officers and police officials. Special security arrangements have been made at these polling stations so as to avoid any untoward incident during the elections.

The Deputy Commissioner has directed the assistant returning officers to set up special control rooms at their respective head-quarters so as to give and collect any information about elections.

While addressing the meeting, the SSP, Roopnagar, Ranbir Singh Khatra, disclosed that elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure security of contesting candidates, polling stations, ballot papers, ballot boxes and counting centres. Among others, the representative of the western command of the Indian Army, Major Jha, was also present at the meeting.

R- Day function

The sub-division level Republic Day function will be celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm on the grounds of the Christian High School, here tomorrow, for which all arrangements have been completed. The SDM, Kharam Avtar Chand Sharma, will unfurl the national flag and will take the guard of honour.

Birbal Dass Sharma, a local resident and a retired DSP of the Punjab Police, has been appointed vice-chairman of the Roopnagar district Punjab Police Pensioners Association, by its district unit chairman.
