Two persons were killed on the spot and three others injured when a tanker rammed into a taxi at Charni road in south Mumbai this morning. The taxi-driver, whose identity was yet to be established and Kanchan Devi Jain, a passenger, died on the spot, police said.

The injured have been identified as Narendra Kumar Khule (32), Vimla Devi Jain (27) and Laxmi Lal Jain (41), police said adding that they have been admitted to the Nair hopital.

The tanker driver, Dharmendra Brijlal Razak, has been arrested for negligent driving.

Stab victim dead n Sidesh Kumar Ram Naresh Singh who was stabbed on June 19 at his residence at Nav Vikas Chawl, 5th Golibar Road, Santacruz (East) succumbed to his injuries yesterday. Vakola police have launched a manhunt to nab the killer, suspected to be the victim’s room partner. According to assistant police inspector Rauf Sheikh of Vakola police, the accused Gautam Maur assaulted the deceased around 11.30 am on June 19 at their residence.

Investigations have revealed that the deceased was struck in the front of police could not even records his dying statement. Singh’s brother got to know of the attack around 3.30 pm from neighbours. Singh was rushed to V N Desai Hospital at Santacruz (E). However, as his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to Nair Hospital at Mumbai Central. He died on Sunday at 6.30 pm.

AIBDA appeal

The president of the All India Bank Depositor’s Association (AIBDA), Dadi B Engineer has appealed in a press statement on Monday to bank employees not to go on the proposed strike on July 4. He said that such strikes not only inconvenience the banking public but also lead to loss of public sympathy for bank employees.

Astro course

The University of Mumbai has announced a course in astronomy with the co-operation of TIFR, Nehru Planetarium, Khagol Mandal and Amateur Astronomer’s Association. The non-formal and exam-oriented course will commence on August 3. Age and educational qualifications are no bars.
