A scrap dealer was sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment recently and fined Rs 1 lakh by Special Sessions Judge (NDPS) A R Joshi for possession of 1414.545 kgs of diazepam tablets valued at Rs 14.14 crore in 1996. Two others were however acquitted for lack of evidence.

Sleuths from Narcotics Cell of the Mumbai police conducted a raid on the godown of Mohammed Hussain Rifazat Khan (60) at Dharavi on December 6, 1996.

They recovered 175 cartons containing the contraband. On questioning, Khan disclosed that the contraband was handed over to him by a warehousekeeper Kishore Shivaji Thakker who in turn said that a clearing agent Raman Hariharan Iyer gave them to him after failing to get the clearance (from who?). Thakker allegedly told Khan to dispose of the tablets. Thakker and Iyer were arrested a few days later.
