NEW DELHI, June 30: Two undertrials were stabbed to death in Tihar jail last night. Although the motive is still unclear, the incident is being ascribed to gang rivalry.
According to the police, the incident occurred last night after the counting of prisoners got over in jail number 3. The victims are 26-year old Anurag, from Tughlakabad who was admitted in to the jail in Spetember last year for six cases of theft and robbery and Amod Kumar alias Pandit, a resident of Moti Nagar who has been in the jail since March 1995 in connection with three cases of robbery and dacoity.
This morning, around 8.50 am, police received a call from the Deputy Superintendent informing them about two prisoners found with grievous injuries in the barracks. They were discovered when the counting of prisoners began in the morning. The medical officer of the jail hospital was called and he pronounced them dead.
Police say that their investigations reveal that they were stabbed by three fellow undertrials – Asghar Ali Baig, Ajit Singh and Gazi Singh. “Cloth was first stuffed into their mouth to prevent them from screaming and then they were stabbed repeatedly in the chest,” said Addl DCP (West) S.K. Gautam.
While Baig is accused in a kidnapping case, Ajit and Ghazi Singh are both accused in separate robbery cases. According to the police, here too the attackers fashioned their weapons by reshaping the aluminium plates and other utensils in which they are provided with food, into sharp edged weapons. The SDM has been informed and will be conducting the enquiry.
