July 17: Even as the Justice B N Srikrishna Commission of Inquiry is yet to table its findings on the 1992-93 communal riots, another sitting judge of the Bombay High Court will investigate the July 11 police firing which killed ten dalit youth and led to riots in the city. Justice Gundewar was yesterday asked to head the commission. Born on January 2, 1941, at Hingoli, Parbhani district in Marathwada region, Justice Gundewar schooled in Hingoli and acquired his LLB degree from the University of Pune. He secured a first class first in both the years of the law exam. Thereafter, he worked as a part-time lecturer in M P Law college in Aurangabad. Later, he practised law in Parbhani for about four years. In 1972, he became the First Class Judicial Magistrate. He was promoted as the Additional District Judge in 1982 and was later appointed as a district judge in 1989.Justice Gundewar was elevated to the position of a judge in the BHC on June 9. He was part of the division bench of Justice Ashok Agarwal. Prior to this, he was the district judge in Bhandara, Jalgaon, Ratnagiri and Nasik.
