DUBAI, July 18: Three Indians belonging to the Mumbai underworld were executed by a firing squad at dawn here today for shooting to death two members of a rival gang in broad daylight in Dubai in August 1995.The three shooters were involved in the daylight killing of Dawood Ibrahim's top aide, Sunil Sawant. They were identified as Devanandan Kannamwal, Dhananjeya Rajanna and Shyamsunder Amen. The main shooter was Rajanna while Amen and Devanandan were the accomplices.Sunil Sawant who was supposed to be the cause for the split between Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan was shot dead in August 1995. The execution verdict was upheld by the Ruler of Dubai on July 14, this year.Anchan, 25, who actually carried out the contract killing, his accomplices Aymen and Devanandan, 35, a tailor, who arranged for their visas, were allowed to speak to their family members yesterday after they were told of the impending execution.The wife of one of the convicts told the court that she did not want diya (blood money paid by the accused as compensation), as she feared that the rival group would take revenge on her children, the Khaleej Times said. Sawant and Mujibullah Mussalman, a Nepali friend were shot dead by Anchan two years ago at Devanandan's shop. But he was caught by onlookers when he fell into a manhole while trying to flee. He later confessed to killing nine rival gang members in India, the daily said, adding the convicts and the victims were believed to have belonged to the same gang initially before they split.Sawant, who joined the Dawood gang in 1988, was wanted in a TADA Act case in India for killing a rival gang member and two police guards in J J Hospital in Mumbai in 1992 and has been at large since 1985.The three convicts were sentenced to death by the court on December 30, 1996 and the verdict upheld at the appeal court on April 13, 1997 and by a higher court on July 5, 1997.Attorney General Ibrahim Bu Melha said the convicts deserved no mercy as ``bloodshed was of no consequence to them and they chased rivals to other parts of the world, spreading terror. Crime is foreign to the peaceful UAE society.''The execution is the second in Dubai in recent memory. In September last year a UAE national was executed on charges of raping and killing a child.
