Last night, a seriously injured 58-year-old constable of Lucknow Police was made to take rounds of three prominent city hospitals. He finally died on a stretcher at King George Medical University (KGMU).

From Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to KGMU to Balrampur Hospital and back to KGMU — this was the story from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm as Shrivastava’s colleague, Yadvendra Singh, pleaded with doctors to save his life.

‘‘We were both in uniform. Still, no one at KGMU was prepared to treat him. Bed nahi hai, Balrampur le jao…mar thodi jayega, is all I got to hear at KGMU,’’ Singh said, adding: ‘‘When I took him back to KGMU, the doctors said admission papers had to be filled up first. He died, waiting.’’

In another nine months, Shrivastava would have retired after putting in nearly 35 years of service in Uttar Pradesh Police.

Shrivastava and Singh, posted at Hasanganj police station, had left for Itaunja last evening. They were to be on duty at a function of the CM. It, however, got cancelled and they were returning on Singh’s motorcycle when they met with an accident near Itaunja police station around 8:30 pm. Shrivastava, on the pillion, suffered more injuries.

‘‘We were trying to avoid a speeding truck and our bike skidded. I rushed Shrivastava to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The doctors put him on glucose drip and said I should take him to KGMU,’’ says Singh.
