CHANDIGARH, Nov 18: The Fourth Gorkha Rifles (4GR) is observing its last reunion of this millennium at the 14 Gorkha Training Centre, Sabathu from tomorrow. Vice Chief of the Army Staff Lt Gen Chandra Shekhar and 11 British officers, who had served with the Regiment during pre-independence days, besides a large number of serving officers, JCOs and other ranks will be joining the three-day celebrations. A reunion is held once in five years.A guard of honour will be presented to Lt Gen Chandra Shekhar, who is also the Colonel of the Regiment. Memorial services, sanik sammelan, release of First Day Cover, pagal gymkhana, band concert, sports events and a reunion dinner will also be organised. Raised on August 6, 1857 when a group of officers and men of the 66 Gorkha regiment raised the Extra Gorkha Regiment at Pithoragarh, it has since left its mark in battles fought across three continents.In the 19th century, the regiment undertook operations in Lushais, Afghanistan, China, Burma and Chitral. During the First World War, the regiment saw action in western Europe and west Asia. The regiment was also actively involved in Europe and East Asia during World War II. 4 GR has also taken part in all post-independence wars.Apart for a large number of Battle Honours, 4 GR has to its credit four Maha Vir Chakra, 16 Vir Chakra, five Shaurya Chakra, one Yudh Seva Medal, 26 Sena Medal and 35 Mention-in-despatches.
