Fifty per cent of Maharashtra’s population will benefit from Thursday’s Court ruling on 27 per cent quota for OBCs in higher educational institutions, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said in Mumbai on Thursday.

The ruling will enable OBCs to get entry into IITs and IIMs, Deshmukh said. He credited Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and HRD Minister Arjun Singh for their role on reservation for OBCs.

Public Works Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who is among the most powerful OBC leaders in Maharashtra, also welcomed the Court ruling. “Almost 54 per cent students in the country, who are OBCs, will benefit from the decision,” Bhujbal, who is president of the All-India Mahatma Phule Samata Parishad, said.

The Parishad had been demanding implementation of the 27 per cent quota for OBCs and also implementation of the Mandal Commission all over the country, Bhujbal said.
