CALCUTTA, AUG 28: Six dacoits were killed in an encounter with police in Jangipara in Hooghly district last midnight. One child was killed in the incident, reportedly due to shock.

According to police sources at the Writers’ Buildings, a group of 20 dacoits from Murshidabad district gathered at about 1.00 am and entered the house of one Panalal Ghosh. A police party patrolling the area became suspicious of the men standing outside the house and confronted them. Several of the dacoits hurled some country-made bombs at the police and escaped. However, one group of them standing on the room could not get away and started firing at the police, the sources said. While two police personnel were injured in the firing, all six dacoits on the roof were killed.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the dacoits “killed” Ghosh’s grandchild when the child began crying in their presence.
