The drive against suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators in Arunachal Pradesh has raised an alarm in Assam. The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has accused the Congress-led Government in Assam of not taking any action against those who are taking shelter in Assam after being driven out of the neighbouring state.

The drive was launched on July 5 and the All-Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) too has joined the campaign, organising meetings and urging the local people to inform the authorities about the presence of any suspected person.

Reports from Arunachal Pradesh said Bangladeshi nationals had infiltrated into the state to take up manual work in view of a number of construction projects coming up in that state. A large number of them were also working as daily-wage labourers and vendors, reports said.

The AASU has complained that while Arunachal Pradesh was pushing them out, the Assam Government was doing nothing. “Bangladeshi infiltrators who had entered Arunachal Pradesh are being thrown out. They are taking shelter in Assam. But our Government is doing nothing,” said Tapan Gogoi, AASU General Secretary.

The AASU also demanded that the Bangladeshi nationals ousted from Arunachal be kept in detention camps and then deported. “You cannot allow Assam to become a dumping ground. But the Assam Government is just sitting idle,” Gogoi added.

The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP on its part has sought the Governor’s intervention into the matter. “The Congress-led Government seems happy that more Bangladeshis have arrived. For the Congress, every Bangladeshi is just a vote, nothing else,” said Dilip Saikia, President of the state unit of BJYM.

Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has denied that his Government had dumped any foreign national into Assam. “We are only pushing out those who were staying in our state without any valid document,” Dorjee said.
