Classical singer Rupi Mahindroo has turned her talents to interpreting the hymns of the Guru Granth Sahib in her just-released cassette, Gobind Ke Gun Gaau. Many Chandigarhians will recognise the name … and not just because they remember seeing it on the credit line of Mama Mia, Sharon Prabhakar’s latest album. Rupi hails from Chandigarh and studied here (Carmel Convent, GCG and Punjab University before going on to Indira Kala Music University).

A student of Dr S. Kalekar (VC of IKMU) and renowned Hindustani vocalist Sulochana Brihaspati, Rupi has been singing professionally since 1978 and has performed all over India and abroad. Presently based in Dehradun where she teaches music at Wellhams Girls’ High School, she also finds time to conduct music sessions for Karuna Vihar, an institution for mentally handicapped children.

For Fitness Freaks
Personal Point, the fitness cum health centre, has recetly opened its Chandigarh branch at Sector 9 on Madhya Marg. Dr Samir Goel, one of the proprietors of the Centre, said that since there was a good demand for the Panchkula branch of the Centre, it was decided to open one outlet in the City too, for the health-conscious residents.

O cater to the needs of In September, the Ludhiana branch of the Centre was opened by model-cum-film actress Nafisa Ali, who is an ardent supporter of fitness. The Chandigarh centre includes a dietician and trained counsellors. Fitness centres are now developing low-calorie and high-protein foods. Seema, also with the Centre, says that the the multi-therapy approach and the loss-of-weight techniques of Personal Point are on natural lines. She adds that the Centre does not use any drugs, surgery, liposuction or heat techniques.
