For the past two months, a key accused in the Satyendra Dubey murder case, registered “absconding”, had been lodged in Patna Jail in another case under another name. The “discovery” was made when Uday Choudhary was brought to Beur Jail two days ago and somebody recognised him.

Choudhary ran away while he was being brought from Beur Jail to the Special CBI Court here under the Pirbahore Police Station on June 23 this year. Prior to this, he had escaped from the same court premises on December 15, 2006. That time he had been re-arrested from Gaya after one and a half months.

According to jail authorities, Uday, who had changed his name to Bijay Choudhary, was arrested this September by Punpun (Patna) Police Station and subsequently sent to Patna city jail. He was transferred to Beur Central Jail two days ago. Beur Jail Superintendent O P Gupta said: “Old staffers of the jail promptly identified Uday as he had served a jail term here for a long time. All the previous charges of Satyendra Dubey case have been framed against him and now, he is serving a jail term in two cases. He also faces a fresh case of impersonation.”

Another accused, Mantu Kumar, had also escaped from the court premises on September 13, 2005.

Dubey, an engineer with Golden Quadrilateral project, was shot dead near Gaya in November 2003. He was allegedly killed after he blew the whistle on corruption in the project. The case was subsequently handed over to the CBI.
