Hitting back at senior BJP leader L K Advani for his remark that Manmohan Singh did not understand politics, Congress on Friday said the inference was that he was a ‘straightforward and transparent Prime Minister’.

“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a statesman. He will now lower himself. He will not politicise everything. He has the power of discretion to distinguish between politics and development,” AICC Media Department Chairman M Veerappa Moily said.

He added that indirectly, the inference from Advani’s remarks was that Singh was a straightforward and transparent Prime Minister.

Moily was reacting to Advani taking a dig at Singh over his remarks on the former being anointed BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate, saying he ‘does not understand politics’.

Advani, talking to reporters in Ahmedabad, said the Prime Minister has derided the BJP for declaring him its Prime Ministerial candidate because ‘he does not understand politics’.

“I would just say that the Prime Minister is not a political person because a politically aware person cannot make such a comment,” Advani said.
