Chennai, Dec 20: In a new twist to the controversy over the age of Chief Justice of India A S Anand, about 70 advocates demanding his impeachment, were taken into custody here today for violating prohibitory orders.
The advocates were attempting to take out a procession to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and ask him to direct DMK MPs in the Lok Sabha to move a motion for the impeachment of Chief Justice Anand on his age controversy.
The Apex court recently handed a suspended sentence of prison to a Chennai-based advocate for having sent a threatening telegram to Anand over the issue.
The advocates, including president of the Madras High Court Association R Karuppan, were taken into custody as they had not sought prior permission to take out a procession, police said.
The association has been demanding that the CJI step down from the office till the controversy over his age is settled.
The association, at a meeting last week, had also decided to send copies of its allegation against the CJI to the Supreme Court judges.
