NEW DELHI, Nov 23: Displaying an incisive and purposeful game, Afghan Club, Bhawalpur (Pakistan) put behind yesterday’s debacle to rout last year’s runners-up Punjab Police 5-2 to keep their hopes alive for the knock out berth in the 34th Nehru Hockey tournament here today.

With this defeat, their second in three outings, Punjab Police crashed out of contention.

Earlier former champion Indian Airlines whipped Army XI 6-3 to record their first win in two superleague outings. However Army XI has already made it to the last four stage with two wins.

Tommorrow Airlines will take on Afghan Club in the crucial last pool II superleague match. Learning the lesson from yesterday’s rout, Afghan Club played to a plan and surprised the rivals with their thrust and penetration. If only the visitors had brought he full team one shudders to think what would have happened to the local clubs.

For the first ten minute Afghan Club forced their rivals to be on the defensive. Aleem Raza delighted the crowd with some super dribbles and dashes which left the police defence rattled.
