With Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi forced to remain out of action for the third successive week over nagging health problems, there’s a possibility that Assam may soon have a Deputy Chief Minister.
Gogoi, who was admitted to AIIMS for a slip disc problem in the third week of August, was readmitted on Monday after he developed pain in his abdomen.
Though sources said Gogoi’s ailment was not serious, his readmission has prompted Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief spokesman Silvius Condpan to say the government may have to appoint a Deputy CM ‘‘sooner or later’’. Though work has not been hampered, the Chief Minister has been away for long, sources said.
A state Secretariat official has been shuffling between Guwahati and Delhi at least once a week carrying files that are required to be signed by the Chief Minister himself, they said.
Several senior ministers who had eyed the Chief Minister’s post last year, are lobbying in Delhi.
