A new personal law board was formed today stating that the All India Muslim Personal Law Board was not being truly representative of the community’s interests. The new board assures it would do justice to the framework of the Shariat while working out problems of the community.

Established in 1972, the AIMPLB has been playing a pivotal role in the discussions on Babri Masjid and reforms in personal law. The president of the New All India Personal Law Board, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, said: ‘‘We feel both sides should negotiate. But just as the Hindu organisations, we also believe our beliefs are more important than the law…We have great respect for the law but we would first like to sort the matter through negotiations.’’

S.Q.R. Illyas of the AIPMLB said: ‘‘We believe that the decision of the courts would be final on the Babri Masjid issue.’’
