While the Gandhis — Rahul and Varun — are hogging all the limelight with their foray into politics, another third-generation descendant of a prominent political family has, without much ado, hit the poll trail in western UP.
Meet 25-year-old Jayant Chaudhary, grandson of former prime minister late Chaudhry Charan Singh. This London School of Economics alumni is learning his lessons fast from his father and also the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh.
Party members are obviously elated. ‘‘It will give a boost to us,’’ says leader Raj Kumar Sangwan. Seeking blessings from elders, Jayant knows his lines well. ‘‘We have to carry the youth as well as my grandfather’s old followers from the BKD days,’’ he says. The party founded by Charan Singh is the same and the policies are the same, he tells his audience who have waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the Chhotey Chaudhry’s (Ajit’s) son.
‘‘People here are emotional. They break down on remembering Chaudhry sahab (Charan Singh),’’ confesses Jayant. He also dutifully tells his audience about his family’s fight for kisan aur mazdoor. His father resigned from power on the issue of income tax on agriculturists, he says.
‘‘Paanch saal koi nahi poochhta, par abhi sab log apko poochhenge (No one thinks of you for five years, this is the time when your voice counts),’’ he reminds them.
Jayant’s charm may spell success for his father. ‘‘It is good that he has come from abroad to take up the problems of kisans, mazdoors? and youth,’’ says former NAS college student union president Gyanendra Sharma. At the moment, he is concentrating on roadshows. But,if his party orders, he will contest the polls, he says.
