DERA BASSI, January 12: The Akali-BJP combine is all set to rule the Dera Bassi Municipal Council by capturing seven out of 13 seats, the counting of which took place at late in the evening today soon after the voting process was completed. The Congress party which has ruled the council over the years, however, could manage only six seats, one more seat in comparison to the previous council elections.

Former MC president defeated: The prominent among those who were defeated, are the outgoing Municipal Council president and Congress leader Amrit Pal Singh from ward number 12, former councillor Ravinder Vaishnov from ward number 9 and the Congress candidate Bakshish Singh from ward number 3.

When contacted on telephone, the Returning Officer of the Dera Bassi Council, Navtej Singh said that about 86 per cent polling was recorded today. 9267 out of a total of 10831 voters cast their franchise to elect their 13 representatives out of 37 contesting candidates in fray.

He also said that barring a minorincident of allegations, the polling was held in a peaceful manner and no untoward incident was reported from any ward of the council.

He further said that the highest poll of 92 per cent was recorded in ward number 2 where 505 out of 546 came forward to cast their votes. The minimum poll of 77 per cent was recorded in ward 11 where 657 out of 845 electorates participated.

A total of 760 votes were polled in ward number 1, 713 in ward number 3, 544 in ward number 4, 925 in ward number 5, 951 in ward number 6, 783 in ward number 7, 658 in ward number 8, 845 in ward number 9, 768 in ward number 10, 639 in ward number 12 and 695 in ward number 13.

Elaborate security arrangements were made to conduct the polling in a free and fair way. The SP (headquarters) and the Additional Deputy Commissioner themselves supervised the security arrangements.
