Sitting Congress MLA from Beas Jasbir Singh Dimpa and his brothers — Harmanbir Singh Gill and Rajan — were booked by the police on Monday for allegedly murdering an Akali activist Dilbagh Singh. Superintendent of Police P S Khaira said six Congress activists have also been booked under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Dilbagh Singh was killed in Beas during a clash between Akali and Congress activists. The incident took place when hundreds of Akali activists reached the police station in Beas to release a party worker Sarbjit Singh, who was allegedly arrested at the behest of Dimpa.

When the Akali workers were on their way back with Sarbjit Singh, they clashed with Congress activists. A Congress activist allegedly fired from point blank range. Dilbagh Singh died on the spot.

SAD(Badal) candidate Manjinder Singh Kang, contesting from Beas, alleged that Dimpa was present when the clash took place and it was at his behest that Dilbagh Singh was fired at. Kang and several Akali activists staged a stir on the National Highway at Beas demanding immediate arrest of Dimpa.

When contacted, Dimpa refuted the allegations levelled by Kang and said that it was a self-fabricated story meant to defame him. He alleged that during the clash, Akali activists fired at the Congress workers and Dilbagh Singh was killed by Akalis themselves who were trying to lay a trap for his supporters.
