The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Gujarat Police claims it has identified a ‘‘local contact’’ who has established that it was the Lashkar-e-Toiba which was behind the Akshardham temple attack, say top police sources.

‘‘All we can say about the man is that he will soon be arrested. We know where he is,’’ a senior ATS officer told The Indian Express. He added that the ATS has unearthed an ‘‘elaborate’’ Lashkar network in the state.

The two suspected terrorists, who had stormed the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar three months ago, killing 36 people, were officially identified as Mohammad Amjad Bhai of Lahore and Hafiz Yasir of Attok.

Special Inspector General of Police (Anti-Terrorist Squad) Vipul Vijoy told the The Indian Express that there is no outfit by the name of Tehrik-e-Kisas (Movement for Revenge), a group to which the terrorists were earlier thought to have belonged. A note found on them had vowed revenge for the post-Godhra riots.

The ATS team, during the course of investigation, also found out that the two fidayeens had travelled all the way from Kashmir carrying their weapons hidden in beddings. When the two came to the city they had at least Rs 3,000 each and were helped by the ‘‘local contact.’’

Director General of Police K Chakravarthy, however, plays it safe. When contacted, he said: ‘‘We have not received any official intimation about their identity. Our first priority was to preserve DNA samples and fingerprints which we have already done.’’
