The ruling Congress in Goa is caught in a dilemma after date for the Mormugao Lok Sabha by-elections were declared on Tuesday. The party is torn between two of its loyalists and MP-turned-rebel Churchill Alemao, who is a supporter of the Digamber Kamat Government in the state.
The Lok Sabha elections were necessitated after Alemao resigned from his post when he was denied the Cabinet berth at the Centre. But Alemao is now demanding that the Congress back his daughter Valanka for the seat. However, Sardhina — the newly appointed party President — is opposing the move. “The high command will select a senior Congress leader as candidate for the elections,” he said. The decision not to give a party ticket to Alemao’s daughter is unanimous. “Alemao’s entry into the Cabinet is not liked by the party. However, if his daughter gets a party ticket, it will be great injustice to loyalists,” said a senior party leader.
