AHMEDABAD, MAY 26: "Hun Gujarati chokri chun," said Indian pop singer Alisha Chinai at a press meeting in the city on Tuesday. From cajoling regional papers to asking her questions in Gujarati to recounting memories of aunts and uncles she has visited over the years in Ahmedabad, Alisha went all out to establish her affiliation to the city.
Dressed in a long black skirt, her long hair dyed blonde, Alisha was here as part of a six-city tour to promote her latest album Dil Ki Rani. The album, a joint effort with Biddu and Shyam Anuragi, was recorded in London. While the first video from the album Vah! Vah! already figures in the various countdown shows, the next Bas will be released within a week. Starring in the video is model Milind Soman, Alisha’s lucky mascot from Made in India – an album that broke a few sales records.
Dil Ki Rani also signals a marked change in her portfolio – from singer to lyricist. Half the numbers in her new album have been penned and composed by Alisha herself.
On her previous album Om – The Inner Voice, Alisha said though the album was different from her usual style, it was her favourite. "It was eclectic, vocally challenging. Though commercially Om could not match the sales of Made in India, I consider it my best," she said.
Conversing fluently in flawless Gujarati, the singer maintained that language was not a barrier in music. She has been singing in Hindi and would continue to do so. But said a Gujarati album was not on the cards.
"The next six months I am going to be busy with the promotion of Dil Ki Rani. By the end of the year I will start working on a new album," said Alisha, refusing to reveal any more details about the album except that it would concentrate on pop and dance.
