
CHANDIGARH, Dec 3: The defending champions, Khalsa College, Mahilpur (men) and Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana (women) will look to assert their dominance this year as well in the 51st Panjab University Inter-College athletic meet which starts tomorrow at the PU Campus ground.
Though some contingents had started trooping in by this evening, the organisers are not sure about the exact number of participants. According to the PU Calender, it has been made mandatory for all the affiliated colleges (having sports quota) to send their athletes. The PU authorities maintain that around 500 particpants from the 75 affiliated colleges of the university (excluding evening colleges) will participate in the three-day championship and the defaulters, if any would be punished accordingly. Fourteen gold medals in the women’s category and 17 among men will be decided during the course of the meet.
However, some of the athletic events such as decathon, walk, half-marathon, relay races and heptathlon have already been organised, alongwith the athletic championship for the evening colleges.
Seven gold medals (four among boys and three among girls) would be decided on the opening day of the meet.
Khalsa College, Mahilpur with 22 athletes will have the largest contingent in the men’s section while the local DAV College, with 20 athletes, are looking forward to giving them a tough competition.
Among women, DAV College, Hoshiarpur with 13 particpants will lead the field, closely followed by Khalsa College, Ludhiana and Ramgarhia Girl’s College, Ludhiana with 12 challengers each. GGS DAV College, Jalalabad were the last year’s runners-up with Guru Nanak National College, Doraha being third-placed in the men’s section while Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Chandigarh Guru Nanak College, Ludhiana were the second and third-placed sides respectively among women.
