CHANDIGARH, Dec 4: Amarjit Kaur of Ramgarhia College, Ludhiana retained the title in the women’s 5,000 metres race on the opening day of the 51st Punjab University Inter-College athletic meet, which commenced at PU Campus here today.

It was a start to finish affair for defending champion, who failed to break her own meet record of 18:24.55, which she set last year. Amarjit clocked 18:41.00 to win the gold. Jaswinder Kaur of Government College-42, finished second in 19:05.40 while Kavita of MCM DAV College-36, was distant third in 19:42.1.

GNP-36 in final
Guru Nanak Public School continued their winning spree in the ongoing Inter-School football tournament for St Xavier’s Trophy being held at Sector 17 Football Stadium. In the semifinal today, they knocked out St Soldier’s International School-28 by two goals to nil to set up a title clash with St Xavier’s School, who outplayed Sanjay Public School-44, 3-1, via tie-breaker, in the second semifinal.

GNP-36 lads played an attacking game and were up by 1-0 at the break. Sandeep, who netted the first goal for the team in the 25th minute, paved the way for second goal in the 10th minute of the second half when he gave a through pass to unmarked Rajbir, inside the box, who made no mistake.

In the second semifinal, St Xavier’s School and Sanjay Public School played a goalless draw in the regulation time. . In the tie-breaker, St Xavier’s converted three shots while SPS-44 scored one.

Badminton team
The 13-member Chandigarh badminton team, including five girls will take part in the Mini and Junior National badminton championship to be held at Vishakapatnam from December 7 to 10. Team: Boys: Under-16: Akash Singh, Gurjit Bajwa, Dhanajay Singh, Gautam Bal, Akash Sethi. Under-13: Narinder, Manu, Vivek Sharma, Manpreet Singh Girls: Under-16: Mala Gaba, Parneeta, Bhawna. Under-13: Harleen Kaur and Tanvir Kaur.

Surinder Majahan will accompany the team as coach-cum-manager.
