The United States kept alive their Davis Cup final hopes when a gamble by captain Patrick McEnroe to play James Blake in the doubles led to a 2-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over champions France on Saturday.

Blake nursed Todd Martin through long stretches of a thrilling three hour 16 minute match against Mickael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

Mardy Fish was originally named to play with Martin. But an hour before the match McEnroe decided to use Blake, who had lost his singles on the opening day against Sebastien Grosjean to give France a 2-0 lead.
