NEW DELHI, May 8: Amita Rawat, a fourth standard student of Navyug Public School, Pataudi House, stole the limelight on the opening day of the 38th Delhi State Gymnastics Championships which opened at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium gymnasium hall here on Friday.

Amita, who has been training at the I G Stadium under the guidance of coach Shampa for the last three years, won both the floor exercices and vaulting horse events for girls in the under-10 category. In floor exercices, Amita emerged winner with a tally of 6.50 points. She was followed by Rekha of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with five points and Ishani Mukherjee of Naraina (4.50).

Amita finished way ahead of her colleagues in vaulting horse and aggregated seven points to win the gold medal. Rekha of Nehru Stadium once again finished second, with 4.50 points. Manvi, also of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, was third with four points. In the boys’ under-10 category, Hunny Kohli of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Sharda Niketan and Nikhil Thakur of Guru Harkrishan Public School, India Gate, took the first two positions in floor exercices and vaulting horse. In floor exercices, Kohli was first with 7.25 points while Thakur came second (6.95). In vaulting horse, it was the other way round, with Thakur finishing first (8.40) and Kohli second with 7.65 points.Over 70 teams, mostly public schools, are participating in u-10, 14, 17 and men and u-10, 12, 15 and women sections. There will be four events in rhythmics. For the first time, the host association is introducing aerobics in the meet.
