Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have asked the West Bengal Government to initiate an independent inquiry into the violence in Nandigram since early 2007. “The state machinery has not acted in an impartial manner. The political nature of the violence, involving the ruling party, necessitates an independent inquiry. The state Government should prosecute those responsible for human rights abuses and examine both the socio-political origins of the violence and the failure of the state to provide protection to the victims,” states the report prepared by four members of fact-finding team of Amnesty International which visited Nandigram and Kolkata from November 28 to 30.The report further says that the inaction of the state Government resulted in serious human rights abuses, including unlawful killings, abductions, sexual assault of women.
