MUMBAI, June 7: With 95.33 per cent marks to his credit, Mumbai boy Rahul Chawathe was no doubt the prime star of the D G Ruparel college dream team that featured prominently in the Mumbai Board merit list of top ranking HSC students declared on Saturday. However, the city topper was still 19 marks behind the overall state HSC Board topper from Amravati division, Ashwin Ravindra Bharambe, who scored a whopping 98.50 per cent in the exams held in March this year.
Some of the other scholars (all from the Science stream) who also notched a few decimals above the city lad are Rahul Lahoti (97.67 per cent) from Jalna, Yogeshwari Deshmukh (97.33 per cent) from Latur, and Sanjaykumar Marakwad (95.67 per cent), all from Aurangabad division; and Ashutosh Sharma (97.17 per cent) from Nagpur. Ironically, though the Amravati boy has stolen a march over the rest with his near perfect run at the HSC examinations, Amravati division on the whole has the poorest pass percentage of just 25.28 per cent.
Yogeshwari Deshmukh of Latur is also the overall topper among girls in the state. In fact, even the top ranker among the backward classes, Alaknanda Dhotre — also from Latur — has managed to get 96.83 per cent marks in the HSC exams. Excelling among girls in the Mumbai Board are two students from Ruparel — Vinita Deodhar and Sonali Patkar — both of whom scored 94.33 per cent and are ranked fifth in the city merit list.
Of the total of 7,60,572 HSC candidates who appeared for the examinations in the state, only 41.58 per cent managed to pass, which does not show much deviation from from the pass percentages of previous years. A total of 14,538 students secured a distinction, 71,711 got a first class and 1,60,171 managed to get a second class. Of the 1,46,324 Mumbai candidates, 89,154 students passed, making the Mumbai Board’s pass percentage the highest in the state at 60.93 per cent. worrying.” Ruparel college girl Charuta Aradhye topped in Arts stream of Mumbai Board with 85.83 per cent marks.
