Kochi, Feb 25: Viswanathan Anand’s failures against Garry Kasparov of Russia continued as the Indian lost tamely in the third round of the Ciudad de Linares category 21 chess tournament yesterday, according to reports reaching here.

Anand, with black pieces, tried Karpov’s favourite Caro-Kann Defence against `Gazza’ as the strongest player in the world is so called. Kasparov embarked on the off-beat 3.Nc3 variation and developed his pieces quickly.

The players delayed castling and when they did so after 16 moves, they both castled long. Kasparov rattled Anand with a sacrifice soon, a move that was to have a bearing on the fate of the game. Anand tried to get out of trouble by exchanging the Queens but Kasparov had obviously seen the finish by now and combined his pieces to take control of the seventh rank. Anand had run out of time after 35 moves, though he had nothing to hope for in that position.

Alexie Shirov, now a Spanish citizen, played a tactical game and won against Veselin Topalov of Spain in34 moves of Sicilian Defence. After giving a pawn in the centre, Shirov, who had lost to Anand in the first round, combined his bishop and knight to chase black’s Queen from move 18 and won an exchange in the process five moves later.

Shirov pressed further and offered material on move 28. In a volatile finish Shirov threw material and won more by move 34. Peter Svidler of Russia defeated Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine in 49 moves of Sicilian defence in the third game.

Anand continued to lead with two points with Shirov. Kasparov and Kramnik, on 1.5 points, have played only two games.
