DORTMUND, July 5: Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand started his campaign in style by defeating Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine in the first round of the Silver Jubilee International chess tournament being played here. Top-seeded Vladimir Kramnik of Russia overcame World champion Anatoly Karpov to share the lead with Anand. Ivanchuk tried the French defence today. Anand went for a system which offered lively piece play at the cost of broken pawn structure. According to experts monitoring the game, Ivanchuk opened a pandora's box when he pushed a pawn on his twenty-fourth move.
