NEW DELHI, December 15: Viswanathan Anand is still hanging by a slender thread and Alexander Khalifman held him again in the second game of the third round in a long 49-move affair sending their match into the rapid games, according to information reaching here.

Anand, who just survived in a difficult first game, must now win the rapid to keep his hopes alive. He is the highest rated player and No 2 and 3 seeds have already been eliminated. If the match remains undecided after that, the two will play blitz games to determine who goes into the third round of the FIDE World Championships at Groningen.

Boris Gelfand who came into the tournament in the third round was held to 1-1 tie after two games by Frenchman Joel Lautier.
