
Mumbai, December 6:Continuing its crackdown on corrupt police officials, the Anti-Corruption Bureau nabbed Sub-inspector Nadgouda Bangappa Patil while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a woman at Hotel Copper Chimney, Worli. Sleuths laid a trap at Hotel Copper Chimney on Saturday and arrested Patil while he had accepted wads of marked currency from the woman.
Said ACB sources, conwoman Sushila Chheda, who was nabbed in Gujarat and remanded to custody at Pydhonie, told Patil that she had been swindled by a woman of Rs 23 lakh last year. Patil began tracking down the woman. In the interim, Chheda was transferred to to Santacruz police station.
Last week, Patil escorted the alleged swindler to the Santacruz police lock-up. Despite Chheda having told Patil that the woman produced was not the one who swindled her, he didn’t let the woman off and instead demanded Rs five lakh for releasing her. When the woman expressed her inability to pay up, Patil agreed on Rs one lakh in four instalments of Rs 25,000 each.The woman and Patil agreed to meet at Copper Chimney on Saturday at 11 pm.The woman reached the hotel late and after she handed over the money, ACB officers, who were seated nearby, arrested him.
