BHUBANESWAR, JULY 30: The Nandankanan Zoo remains in the limelight for all the wrong reasons. After the 13 tigers and a rare alligator, a rare Manipuri breed deer brought from Delhi Zoo last year was found dead in its enclosure today.

Chief Conservator of forests S.K. Patnaik said the female deer belonged to Dhamin breed is found in Manipur alone and is usually bred in captivity. In fact, this particular breed deer is found in more numbers in the zoos than in the wild, he said.

Patnaik said the deer probably

died of haemorrhagic gastro-enteritis but a the cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem.

There were three such deer in the park and the one which died was the oldest of the lot.

The death of the deer comes close on heels of the slaughter of a Caimen species crocodile in its enclosure and the death of a white tiger over the past two days.

Meanwhile, former minister Bijoy Mohapatra and Biju Janata Dal leader Tathagat Satpathy visited the zoo to take stock of the situation following the death of crocodile and tiger. They held discussions with zoo officials about security and the hygiene conditions in which the animals are kept.
