MUMBAI, November 4: In an incident strikingly similar to the one at Malad, the watchman of Mangal Karni Housing Society, Siddarth Nagar, Goregoan (west) was assaulted by a gang with heavy iron rods early today morning.

The watchman, Ram Prasad (65), was found in a pool of blood by the police, and was rushed to the nearby Panvalkar Nursing Home. His condition is said to be out of danger.

The description of the men, who were seen fleeing the scene of crime, matches that of the gang which killed two policemen and a watchmen at Malad a few hours earlier. Police suspect it could be a splinter group of the same Fasse Pardhi gang.

Members of the gang that struck terror at Goregaon — around 15 in number — were armed with choppers and swords. Their were of a dark complexion and wore lungis.

After assaulting the watchman, eyewitnesses said, the gang barged into the society’s Carella building and went on a door-bell-ringing spree. When nobody opened the door, the gang descended on Asha Bharat housing society in the neighbourhood and threatened the watchman with a knife, before escaping.

Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Ranjit Singh Sharma said: “There is strong reason to suspect it was a splinter group of Pardhis that set out in Goregaon,” Sharma added. In a similar incident on November 2 at Diamond Park Society, which is under jurisdiction of D N Nagar police station, watchman Ram Singh Thapa was brutally beaten up by a gang of robbers, suspected to be of Pardhi tribe. Thapa, however, managed to escape with injuries on his head.
